- 2 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the buttercream
- 200g milk chocolate, chopped
- 6 tbsp cocoa powder
- 3 tbsp milk
- 300g icing sugar
- 250g butter, softened
For the cake:
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 180°C/Fan 160°C/Gas Mark 4. Butter and line three 20cm sandwich tins with baking parchment.
Step 2: In a bowl, mix together the sugar, eggs, flour and cocoa powder until well combined.
Step 3: Lightly beat together the butter, milk and vanilla extract until smooth.
Step 4: Fold together the wet and dry ingredients, then pour between the prepared tins evenly.
Step 5: Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes. Remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tins.
For the buttercream
Step 1: Place the chocolate, cocoa powder and milk in a small bowl. Microwave for 1 minute then check to see if melted, microwaving again if not. Stir until smooth then leave to cool for 10 minutes.
Step 2: Stir the butter and sugar into the chocolate mixture until smooth. Cover and leave to stand for 10 minutes.
Step 3: Mix in the icing sugar until smooth then spread onto the cooled cake.
Step 4: Refrigerate for 1 hour to allow the buttercream to set before serving.
