Step 1: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour two 9 inch cake pans.

Step 2: In a mixing bowl, with an electric mixer on medium speed, cream butter and sugar until fluffy.

Step 3: Add flour, eggs, vanilla extract and soda. Switch to low speed to blend. Increase the speed and add milk in 3 additions alternating with flour mixture in 2 additions starting and ending with flour. 

Step 4: Pour batter evenly into the prepared pans and smooth tops. Bake for about 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean. 

Step 5: Cool in pan for 15 minutes. Remove from pan and cool completely on wire rack.

Step 6: Cut cake horizontally into 3 layers and place on cake stand. Layer the bottom third of cake with a thin layer of frosting and top with remaining two-thirds. 

Step 7: With an electric mixer, cream butter until it is light and fluffy (about 1 minute then gradually add sugar until light and fluffy).

Step 8: Add vanilla and double cream and beat till well blended.

Step 9: Frost the cake with the remaining frosting.
